If you are new to lighttpd, I would recommend sticking to Apache. The more you customise the tutorial, the harder it will be for you to follow it - and it is quite involved as it is.
Once you are more experienced with symfony, you can switch to other web servers. Doing a web search for "lighttpd symfony" may well assist too.
