Hi,

I just set up web-hosting for a client with Uk2.net and found out that they don't let you install Symfony on their shared servers Sad

So now I have to cancel and find a new host.

Was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a good symfony host for a small business ecommerce site? (Uses Paypal for actual handling of money however)

I am in Canada, but the clients main customers are in the UK if that makes a difference.

Thanks in advance!
Andrew

Hostway will let you get a dedicated server for as little as $100 a month. We have a server with them and keep several projects on it. Put in enough RAM and tune Apache and Mysql correctly, and one server can go a long, long way.

Also, Rackspace has a new cloud service that starts at $100 a month, and in theory gives you a protected space that is virtually all yours.

There are a lot of cloud services out there, all offering you your own virtual space.

Also, you can check with DreamHost. Don't much about them, but everyone says good things about them.

I haven't used any shared hosting accounts in many years, so I can't really say who is good or who is bad. I've heard many good things about DreamHost. They are suppose to have great customer service, and they say smart things on the company blog. But I have no direct experience with them.

Check out ServerGrove, http://servergrove.com/symfonyhosting

Great customer support, with strong knowledge on Symfony.

I would not recommend running Symfony on shared hosting, there was a pretty good discussion about it on the symfony list a few weeks ago.

Go with a VPS instead, which gives you the flexibility and power of a dedicated server without the high cost.

I used Dreamhost's shared hosting for a long time. For a lot of things they are great: very cheap, plenty of space, SSH access. Loved it, but sometimes you are a power hungry bastard and just have to have root acceess. So I upgraded to A2 hosting's virtual private server offerings. For me, they offer a good combination between price and features. Plus I got to run Ubuntu, which sealed the deal for me.

Jesse.

At this point I would recommend Media Temple. For just $50 a month you can get a whole bunch of domains put on your server. Great customer support. Root access and ssh.

hm...ya that media temple site looks pretty good...

but why would i use them over http://www.a2hosting.com/ ?

if you look at their dedicated servers they offer a very good deal, and lots of power. their service is excellent too, i currently have shared hosting with them.

I've been on Media Temple for several months now and it's been going from great to worse.. The slowness of Databases requests is just untolerable. just today, I had a request taking 1m25sec to complete a few simple request.. they have had outage several times lately but the most important is how slow it is..

I'm using the Grid Service and talked to support who told me to upgrade to the Mysql Container thing. which I did (for another $20/month). It was faster for sure but then I end up with a $40 a month for a shared environment that's not even that fast.

On top of this it is impossible to install an APC accelerator or to control your PHP version on the shsred host..

All this is really building up and I'm getting really angry now.

I'm looking at servergrove.com which seems nice and not too pricey. Any recent feedback on the VPS offer would be welcome.

I know some of the guys from servergrove are posting in this forum so please avoid "commercial" pitch.
Let me know

same here....75$ a year with a domain included....and everything you need for symfony...

For now I only got a problem with the fact that you can't customize your php.ini, and that apc is not available (but maybe there is a solution for both, I'm ticketing now).

You tell me it's the institution
Well you know
You better free your mind instead

symfony addicted.
