7.Zend Framework 0 / 0%

Hi, I wanna know wich of the well known frameworks is the best choice for myspace-clone community website.

CakePHP ? Zend Framework? Symfony Smile?

RubyOnRails?

Django?

or maybe
Kohana? Prado? or something else?

Is it better to use PHP or Ruby or Python? I will pay a webdesigner for this job, but I want to know which lang and framework is in your opinion the best for this kind of application.
I expect about 10 000 or more unique visitors each day so I want to know words from You, the professionals.

It is important that the user can change the css, like on myspace.com.

Then I want to know if is it better to provide for users profile page this URL
/I have 4 letters in my domain name./
-

username.****.com

or

****.com/username

thanks in advance

For one questions like these don't attract a lot of answers because they are asked over and over again.

Writing an application from scratch may not be meaningful and from your question it is obvious you have knowledge of web programming, or you want to know if the candidates you might be interviewing or offering themselves for the job have some clue of what they are talking about or know all the buzzwords.

FWIW you might consider Drupal, with its extensions like CivicSpace. It may not have all the OOP goodies, but with experienced developers it may take you a long way without having to code from scratch.
Your developers will have to love non OOP PHP.

In the case of the profile page username.xxxx.com is better, but you'd better draw up a list of names to be reserved or excluded.

PS. This is the first time I heard about Kohana Smile

thx sporo2000 for your reply

Is the extension CivicSpace capable of changing CSS layout from frontpage like on myspace profilepage or should be changed easily in the code of this extension?

What about Dupal and Server - I mean performance. Is Drupal, in generall, faster than Symfony or CakePHP?

Drupal has modules which allow CSS to be edited on a user basis.

Drupal makes heavy use of SQL queries, and it is quite demanding on shared servers. VPSs or dedicated servers will be the way to go if your site is successful.

In terms of speed it won't be as fast as Symphony and CakePHP as there is a lot of functionality built in. It is not a development framework as such, but a lot of the functionality comes from readymade modules.

It simply a trade of between writing everything from scratch which will take months, or getting up and running within weeks with customizations and tuning.

Drupal is not a development framework like CakePHP, Symfony, RoR etc, but is used by some as such because its design.

Read up on it at drupal.org

This looks quite interesting, came across it recently:

As to which is the best - many of them are excellent. The best one will be down to the availability of skills in your area, and (if you are also to be working on it) your skills as well.
