If you want to run it from a USB stick, you need a portable version of a web server. Call up your fave search engine and try "portable apache windows" (or whatever platform you're on).

If you want database functionality, rather than getting portable MySQL, you may wish to use sqlite, which is built into PHP.

Yes, it will work, if PHP/Apache is working.

Just follow the installation instructions in the Documentation section - once you have a web and database server working, there is nothing different you need to do.

Find a portable installation that contains PHP 5.2 or 5.3. Do another web search, and this time add the phrase "PHP 5" to the end.

Or, go to the community discussion group for the product you've downloaded, and ask them if they do a PHP 5 version.

Might I recommend:

http://portableapps.com/

They have XAMPP as an app, plus a ton of other cool apps to have on a thumb drive.

Currently Using
---------------------------
Symfony 1.4/Doctrine 1.2
MySQL 5.1

i remember trying that on an old php framework ( phpMVC ) and loading any page was too long like 10~20s from the slowness off usb to access the required framework file.
