What’s the size of your company?
Between 50 and 500

What is your interest for symfony?
Both

Did you introduce symfony into your company?
Yes (but I am the sole developer/designer for the company)

How did you get to know symfony?
SymfonyWebsite

Since when?
28 Jul 2008

In your opinion what are the 3 main upside and the 3 main downside of symfony comparing to other Framework?
+ :
1 IT WORKS!
2 Very well thought out - very careful about segregating code and maintaining a strong MVC environment
3 Intuitive functionality - not knowing Symfony, it is very easy to write code/parameters the way I would intuitively do it and not only does Symfony accept it, but it also works as advertised
- :
1 Installation and setup for website is a bit involved compared to cakePHP
2 Supporting documents are not clearly identified on the web site - I keep finding important, helpful Symfony-Project.org documents by accident when I am search google for help with problems I am having while I am learning symfony - I can't seem to find them listed anywhere OBVIOUS in the Symfony-Project.org Documents pages
3 Not advertised enough - I gave up trying to use the seemingly popular cakePHP because it kept on getting in the way of what I was trying to do. I am having amazing success with Symfony and I strongly believe that Symfony is SO much better than cakePHP that any comparison simply isn't fair to cakePHP!!!!

Name 3 of its best technical functionalities
1. Don't know it well enough yet to respond
2.
3.

Which other framework do you use?
Did use cakePHP for a week but stopped using it after I became bald from pulling my hair out in frustration.
Used to do a lot of .Net (ASPX) programming

Please rank the three best frameworks according to your personal standards
1. Symfony
2. Symfony
3. .Net (a different kind of framework, but still a framework)

Do you only use Open Source? If so why?
As much as possible. I have very little money available to buy software and as a programmer, I believe in sharing the code with anyone that wants it - I am just that kind of guy - I benefit from using free software so I should pass my stuff on for free to someone else that might benefit, etc., etc.

Also, one of the best ways to learn programming is to 'reverse engineer' someone else's code to learn how they did it! I started my programming career that way 30+ years ago and I still do it that way!

Name 3 main advantages of the Open Source for you
1. I can afford it
2. High Quality
3. Promotes future development by enabling projects that no one wants to support financially but ends up advancing the entire sphere of the technological/programming universe!

What kind of web application do you mainly develop with symfony?
Heavily data-driven websites/applications - the more involved (data-wise) the application, the better suited it is for Symfony

What would you like to see develop around symfony
More documentation

What are your hopes for the future of symfony?
That it continues to progress and refine itself and puts all other PHP based frameworks out of business - to use another PHP framework is just a waste of time!

In your opinion what are the 3 main upside and the 3 main downside of symfony comparing to other Framework?

+ :
1 Common tasks automated [cache, routing, logs, etc]
2 Documentation
3 MVC distribution

- :

1 Is a very long learning curve but the problem is that when i learn one version the other is launching. Give at least a cople years to one version, focus only in one, fix bugs, create more integrated helpers. Is really annoying that when you get knowledge and experiencie you have to start again and again. You have to give support to several versions and have plugins that some times works and others dont. Thats why i decided not to continue with macromedia/adobe suite.

2 Jquery full integration will help a lot. Right now we have a a plugin but just work partially and its development was harcoded.

3 Is it really necesary to have so many plugins at page [some of them are just started and other works partially], and so manny information? Lets decide whats is really necesary and whats not, keep it simple, if you are new you can get loose at page.

Website better organized / Less versions

What are your hopes for the future of symfony?
1 Implement jQuery and Prototype native working the same way [both have the same popularity]
2 Itll be better to have one subdomain with its web folder for application rather than php files [i know this can be done handly].

web_public/index.php => www.domain.com
web_admin/index_dev.php => admin.domain.com

In your opinion what are the 3 main upside and the 3 main downside of symfony comparing to other Framework?
+ :
1 Rapid Application Development
2 Full-stack (great for a project from scratch)
3 Documentation
- :
1 Full-stack (difficult to integrate into existing projects)
2 Performance
3 Not too keen on sfForms - yet another form component lib - would of been happier if an existing library could have been used

Name 3 of its best technical functionalities
1. ORM Integration (schema.yml and the build tasks)
2. Validate.yml and form fillin
3. Automated tasks (generate admin modules, build model etc)

Which other framework do you use? Zend Framework

It really depends on the task, I prefer using ZF on legacy code or on an app where I want to pick and choose for performance reasons. Where I am writing an app from scratch and for speed of development Symfony wins hands down for me.

Do you only use Open Source? If so why?

2008

In your opinion what are the 3 main upside and the 3 main downside of symfony comparing to other Framework?
+ :
1 : Admin generator, very customizable
2 : Full-Stack, therefore very predictable when you come to another project
3 : Even the freakest needs are implementable, thanks to factories, inheritance, filters...

- :
1 : A quite fragmented documentation (and too short for some advanced features : Embedded Forms, Admin Generator...)
2 : Performance could be better or more optimizable (1.2)
3 : Forms FW could be even better (especially embedded forms)

Name 3 of its best technical functionalities
1. Admin generator
2. Filters
3. ORMs integration

Which other framework do you use? None so much than Sf. (That's there are some matters where I can't really compare)
However, I played with Django, Code Igniter, ZF (by that awful Magento).
